Kybella

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment for permanently reducing submental fat (aka the double chin).

How Does it Work and Who is the Ideal Candidate?

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella (and a naturally-occurring molecule), aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat cells. Once killed, these cells are permanently eliminated and the appearance of the double chin/sub-mental fullness is improved. The ideal candidate has good skin quality with palpable chin fat and a roll/fold when they look down at their feet. Kybella is not a skin tightening treatment. Therefore, it does not work well for loose, thin, and sun damaged skin. See our Ultherapy page for more information on neck skin tightening.

How Long Do the Treatments Take, How Many Treatments are Needed and are the Results Permanent?

Depending on the amount of fat being treated, you may require 2 to 5 treatments. Treatments take 5 to 10 minutes and are spaced 1 to 2 months apart. The fat reduction is permanent and so are the results.

What Should I Expect During and After Each Treatment?

A small needle is used to inject the Kybella solution. These injections will cause temporary discomfort. Moderate swelling, mild redness, bruising, numbness, tissue firmness, and mild pain/tenderness can be expected for 3 to 14 days after each treatment. This is due to the destruction of the fat cells and the body’s natural tissue injury repair process. Less common side effects are temporary problems swallowing and a temporary uneven smile due to nerve irritation which usually lasts several weeks or months. In general, treatments are well tolerated and become easier with subsequent treatment. The first treatment is usually the worst.

How Much do Treatments Cost?

Expect a total of 2 to 4 treatments using 1 to 2 vials per treatment depending on the amount of submental fat/fullness. Each treatment will run between $600 and $1000 depending on the size of the area being treated.
